Abstract:
This collection documents the professional work of Dr. Claude E. Welch, Jr., SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Department of Political Science, whose career at the University at Buffalo spanned nearly six decades. Dr. Welch's pioneering research in human rights, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil-military relations, and political transitions, especially in Africa, are well documented throughout this collection.

Scope and Content:
This collection documents the professional work of Dr. Claude E. Welch, Jr., SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Department of Political Science, whose career at the University at Buffalo spanned nearly six decades. In addition to his teaching, research, and scholarship responsibilities, all of which are chronicled in his papers, Dr. Welch held numerous administrative positions within the university including Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs (1976-1980) and Dean, Division of Undergraduate Studies (1967-1970). Dr. Welch's personal life is reflected through photographs, personal ephemera, and a series of correspondence with his parents, his first wife Mrs. Nancy Welch (1941-1979), and second wife Professor Emerita Jeannette Ludwig.The collection includes course syllabi, lecture notes, readings, and images. Articles, conferences, papers, chapters, and books mirror Welch's scholarhip in the areas of political transitions, African politics, human rights, and civil-military relations. Dr. Welch's papers also document the history of the Department of Political Science, including a written history that Welch researched over many years. In a broader perspective, Dr. Welch's papers also chonicle the trajectory of the university, its governance, and the development of its academic programs, from soon after it joined the State University of New York system to its status as a major research institution.The format of material range from paper and print photographs to digital text files, presentations, and correspondence. This reflects the development of technology and modes of teaching during the long tenure of Dr. Welch.
